- Invasive candidal infections can carry a high mortality (up to 40%) and can hard to diagnose
- In the ICU it is important to know which patients are at risk for developing invasive candidal infections
Risk factors for invasive candidal infections
- Critical illness (long ICU stays)
- Abdominal surgery (anastomotic leaks, repeat laporatomies)
- Necrotizing pancreatitis
- Hematologic malignencies
- Solid organ transplant
- Solid organ tumors
- Neonates (low birth wt, preterm)
- Use of broad spectrum antibiotics
- Central lines/PICC lines
- TPN
- Hemodialysis
- Steroid use
- Candidal colinization (urine, sputum)
